View Full Version : My dog is in surgery

My golden/chow mix just went in for emergency surgery. He seems to have some sort of bowel obstruction, they think he is too young for it to be cancer. The vet isn't sure he's even strong enough for the surgery, but without it he'll die before tomorrow. If prayers can help dogs, please pray for him. He's my best friend right now.

Our prayers here are with him. I just brought my 5 month old golden home from the vet today for something similar although he is just fine.

Hope he comes through okay Dave.

He survived two hours in surgery. Vets removed a section of what looks like rope, probably a lot of ingested rope bone fibers. The section had blocked about six feet of intestine. Fortunately both blood flow and motility returned after the blockage was removed, so they chose not to re sect the bowel. Not out of the woods, first he has to come out of the anesthesia, and breath on his own. Then it'll be about 48 hours before we know for sure. Doc said about 50/50 right now. Bill at $2500 and rising, guess I'll have to postpone buying a Porsche 911 for a little while.

Great to hear he got thru the surgery. 911s are great, but they don't give you that warm fuzzy feeling you get from your pets.

Sorry to hear that OGF, hope he pulls through, my heart goes out to you. Our Jack Russell just had surgery to remove a tumor on his leg and forehead, I sympathize on the vet bill.

The vet says, no calls means he's still alright. He went home in a special RV thing our vet has that's like a pet hospital on wheels. He's going to keep checking on him through the night and give me an update in the morning. I'd rather have my dog home, than have more money in the bank. At least I had some there this time. Mostly, I spend it all on car parts. I used to spend it all on hookers and booze, the rest I just wasted, but now I am old.

So sorry to read this Dave. After my two dogs in the last two years after having them 18 years I know how it is. I was convinced I would never have another dog but my wife convinced me after 6 months to get another one.

There is no way he replaces our former family members but he has truly found his own place in our heart. Give it a little time and then maybe consider another. They really do help fill that void.

Condolences as well.

Dave I'm speechless. Yesterday it sounded like everything was going to be fine. I love animals - my girlfriend and I feed about 10 stray cats/kittens in our neighborhood. We even built three makeshift shelters on our front porch so they would survive the winter (one was even heated! heater in a cardboard box - good idea?). Hang in there - nothing hurts like losing a friend.

Bridgitte - sorry to hear about your dog too. That is really awful.

We also recently lost a cat that allowed us to live with her for the last 14 years, and understand what your feeling at this time. Our thoughts are with you, and we're very sad to hear of your loss.

The Power of the Dog

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.
Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie--
Perfect passsion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart to a dog to tear.
When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find--it's your own affair--
But ... you've given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!)
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone--wherever it goes--for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-term loan is as bad as a long--
So why in--Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

I'm sorry Dave. I know it hurts bad. I was away when my Airedale of 14 years passed on, and it still brings me to tears. Murphy and all of our pets passed are somewhere out there together in an endless pasture playing happily as could be.

I know the feeling.

I had 2 dogs of mine from growing up and even after being away for a couple of years with the military, they still recognized my voice and it was as if I never left. When they passed on it was hard for me to come home and realize that they weren't there anymore.

As some people have said, they are part of our family. It's hard to see them go.

It's a bit late, but you have my condolences.

F#CK! Just saw this. Really sorry to hear that. Got a pic of the little guy? It reminds me of when we had to put our 3yr old boxer down because of a heart problem. She was the sweetest boxer I've ever seen...and pretty ugly, too!
