Does Protege Z5 engine have cast iron or aluminum block. I always thought it was cast iron same as a B6 but wikipedia says aluminum block.

Not trying to be a smart *** but that is probably why he is here asking.

DAMN YOU Randy...

Looks like 98+ P's with a ZM-DE are the way to go. I found an engine locally already.

It's probably worthwhile only if it has the aluminum block. Otherwise it's just a 1.5L Miata engine with a bad head design.

If it had an aluminum block I would put a Miata 1.6 head on it. Need Mazmart to check out the block material from their inventory

pull a part has 2 99's
I'll drop a dollar to troll the yard.

According to car-part the 99-00's had a 1.6 DOHC. That matches Wiki and the ZM-DE. I haven't started on my engine yet. It would be nice to start with an aluminum block

I should have said that I'm told the Z5 block is identical to the B6P

the only difference I can find between Z5 and ZM-DE is displacement.

I'm going to go look Sun

Good to know. Either wikipedia is wrong or the aluminum block thing is JDM only.

The only thing a Z5/Z6/ZL block is good for then is a donor for a B6 rebuid.

it still had what appeared to be a main bearing girdle spacer thing.
The timing gear on the cam appears to be the same size as a B6. But it's a single gear on the intake. The exhaust cam is chain driven off of the intake.

I was at the yard yesterday and happened to come across a Z5 block lying in front of a second gen protege. The block is certainly iron. There is also an aluminum girdle in place on the bottom end. The block as a whole looks very similar to a B6, but the backside where it mates to the gearbox is more "fluted", some what resembling a bellhousing.

Absolutely iron and I was comparing it to B6 myself some months back. I have a new ZM block at the shop also.

Sorry so long for a response. I REALLY need help at the mart.

Paul.

no care about the block, interested in the head if it flows better, esp the zl-ve head with VVT

I have not flowed it but my understanding is it flows worse factory.

I'm sure it can be improved on with port work though.

A vvt 1.6. hmmm

Wouldn't happen to know if b6 head camshaft fit the Z series heads?

No, but I doubt it. they are completely different heads.

I would take a trip to Mazmart and take a look yourself.
