View Full Version : R.I.P. 1.6 Engine

As of last night at around 12am my 1.6 officially died. It lost all of it's blood going down the loop in Athens, and the temperature shot like a bullet. But it was too late, loud knocking and smoke came in. 3rd gear felt like 5th gear at 30mph. It stuttered and smoked, but continued, and I drove it close to home before it took it's last gulp of air and shut off for the last time.
The motor saw great times, 180,000 miles exactly almost. It saw long road trips to Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, the north Georgia mountains on endless occasions, and more. It saw autocross and track days. Even some drifting. It saw close to 9,000RPM for almost a year. It bounced off the rev limiter weekly.
I thank you little 1.6 for giving me fun times, and as for my little bright cone red Miata, don't worry little guy, you will have a new engine to beat up and do the same thing to two years later again.
R.I.P. My 1.6...you will become my coffee table.

Damn... it finally went. I guess this is why you've been looking at the rotary options then. I'm kinda sad, that thing was a tough bastard!

I'm assuming the 8,400 rpm revs that you were talking about has something to do with this....

Possibly, but it took over a year for any effect.
And no I prefer the 1.6's personally.

Meh it's just like how people try to comfort themselves with the "it's not the size that counts." You know damn well if you had a 1.8 you would have loved it more! And now you are all too stubborn to go back on yourselves.
1.8 FTMFW!

^Oh snap!!
Honestly, after 1.8's I have driven I really did like the 1.6 more. I have no problem swapping if I thought it was worth it. ;)

My 1.6 could beat up your 1.8.
My dog's better than your dog.
My dad could beat up your dad.
But yeah, 1.6 > 1.8.

some people perfer the SMALL torque bump that a 1.8 has, some prefer the quick revs of the 1.6.

I recently picked up a 1.6, and do enjoy it as much, maybe a bit more than my 1.8. Then again, I think some of that has to do with the lower compression pistons I have in the 1.8 currently.
Of course blue car's gettin a bump in power soon enough, so all bets will be off end of February.

It could have been worse. The engine could have quite literally grenaded...spit chunks all over the place. w00t for losing feet!

Well I was hoping to find some awesome destruction lol. I might even throw a HG on this and see what it does haha, if it runs like normal, Mazda deserves numerous awards.

Simon, are you doing the enduro next month at RA?
A buddy of mine is trying to finish his Miata race car in time and if he does I may go up with him.
