me and a few friends went to hapesville for a drift session, from 10 am until about 3:30 pm. around 3:30 we were finishing up, and i was on my last run, and i was actually not sucking, im not that good in the rain lol, dry is a different story...

little did i know 5 clayton county cops and 1 GSP cop were watching me from a distance, as soon as i finished my final run i spin around to see 6 officers flying towards me all at once. so i stop, shut off my car, and he jupms out and yells get out of the car, youre going to JAIL! so i do it ( in fear for my life) so he gets us all freaked out only to have our cars impounded ( that was 125 out of my bank account) we got so lucky we didnt go to jail, or get tickets for wreckless driving and criminal trespassing.

all in all we got off so lucky, and was it worth it? HELL NO it wasnt! i wont be going to hapesville again, none the less street drifting as much.

new idea!
sanctioned events only!

it was fun until the raid.

lol gosh i love drifting.

So, are you actually retarded? Like, do you have a little wheel chair on your license plate? I ask because if you are, you give the mentally handicapped a bad name.

I'm all for drifting. It's not my thing but a lot of people don't like autocross. They're all wrong, but that's neither here nor there. So, you know, go out and have your fun. But for God's sake, don't be an IDIOT about it! You don't see me slaloming construction barrels. A night in jail would have driven the message in a little further.

Really sucks that things like this are so angrily prohibited. What I wouldn't give to have been born in my parents' generation. They used to do **** like that all the time and never got any harassment for it. :(

are you serious? i see what youre saying, but its not like he was sliding in the middle of traffic or doing anything dumb to compromise his life or anybody elses (i.e. slaloming construction barrels...). to anybody with any common sense, there is nothing really wrong with playing around in an empty parking lot. sure, you COULD wreck your car. but guess who the consequences fall back on? the driver of the car in most cases. not to mention, im sure you have done stupid stuff in a car outside of a sanctioned event for a little fun. who hasnt? i know i have. i dont do it on crowded streets or in traffic, if i do ANYTHING i do it in empty parking lots that are out of the way of other cars, pedestrians, etc.

I'm with you Tommy, when I first started driving, some of the local sheriffs would actually sit and watch us drag race on a deserted stretch of industrial parkway. As long as they were there, no one got in trouble as long as no one acted the fool. If they weren't around to supervise, and then they showed up, that was another story.
It's fun to sit with my neighbors while they work on their assorted muscle cars and hot rods and listen to the stories of when they were younger. The fact that the public overall views street racing, playing around in parking lots, etc. as such a problem is the reason the police feel they have to crack down on it that much harder.

And chill out in here. It's a very touchy subject, no need to get all up in arms or call names for it.

Actually, I recall witnessing Amaff tailing a group of 240s up in the north GA mountains a few months ago. Even when not going 10/10ths, mountain runs (as much as I love them), are a hell of a lot dumber than spinning in a parking lot.

I should have clarified: I'm not saying anything in regards to safety. It's a matter of legal vs not. I never crossed the yellow line, and in a Protege you'd need to SERIOUSLY push to go a whole lot faster than the speed limit up in the mountains (at least on 180), and even then with a quiet car and good tires, you don't give yourself away. Where was this drifting done? I'm not familiar with the location but it sounds like it was in some parking lot, yes? One that you don't own, right? THAT was dumb.

all i have to say, is there was no reason to get all high and mighty about it, im not retarted, and by you taking this sort of mentality on the subject, makes you seem... well... a little retarded. i knew the consequences of what i was doing, i knew what could happen if i were to get caught. and i accepted those facts. and i was not in traffic, nor on a public road doing this. it was a well opened parking lot with no pedestrians or cars to hit. just curbs. if i hit a curb its on me. so no need for immature name calling or stupid stuff, im all for both autocross and drifting. you just went a little over the limit on it.

are you serious? i see what youre saying, but its not like he was sliding in the middle of traffic or doing anything dumb to compromise his life or anybody elses (i.e. slaloming construction barrels...). to anybody with any common sense, there is nothing really wrong with playing around in an empty parking lot. sure, you COULD wreck your car. but guess who the consequences fall back on? the driver of the car in most cases. not to mention, im sure you have done stupid stuff in a car outside of a sanctioned event for a little fun. who hasnt? i know i have. i dont do it on crowded streets or in traffic, if i do ANYTHING i do it in empty parking lots that are out of the way of other cars, pedestrians, etc.

either way, theres no point in acting like youve never done anything stupid in a car before, especially as someone who enjoys driving and pushing limits. you, along with EVERYONE else here, cant say that they have never done anything similar.

legal vs. not isnt always whats most important, in fact it usually never really is. if derek was *****ing about getting caught it would be a different story, but like he said he knew the consequences and was completely fine with them.

calm down, man.

No I remember correctly there are like 6 different moving violations you can get on non public roads. Reckless Driving is one. Now the cool thing is it is the easy one to fight cause you and use the argument that your not endangering anyone and all that. What is funny is that you can also get laying drags on non public roads also:rolleyes:

Sunday, a few friends and I went to a secret spot since it was wet. I watched them go it it for about an hour, rode along and made a couple of passes myself (yup, still got game). Pretty fun place though, nice curves to the lot which made for actually having to have a goal...unlike being in an open parking lot with no structure. Might get some pics/vids next time it's wet.

It's an old spot I used to hit up back when I had the white car. I never took anyone there, but it seems a few people have "discovered" it recently. It's actually better than that other spot for more stuff, but on the downside, there are a few more places to get in over your head. Our spot was good for learning some techniques without worring about damaging the car. This one is also sealed asplalt.

I've never had a good spot, especially with the eager Sandy Springs police :(

It's ridiculous how messing around in an empty parking lot can have such dire consequences. It leads people to mess around on streets so they can stay mobile and usually ends up with bad accidents. Give people a bit more responsibility and people will act more mature.

I'm convinced I could make a killing if I paved over or bought a piece of land with an old parking lot and let people have fun after paying a small entry fee. ****, I could even for a government grant for promoting car control. Honestly, where can regular non-enthusiasts find the opportunity to learn how to drive their car when it's losing control or at the limits? Nowhere. Combine that with a useless driving test and is it any wonder we have so many bad drivers out here?

What would happen is, some ****** from IA would show up. roll his POS Civic & get hurt, and then his family would sue you in court, you'd lose big time, and then due to insurance & liability issues such a place would never be in operation again....UNLESS huge fees were involved. Even signing waivers doesnt protect one from this. If we blame anyone it should be insurance companies and their lawsuit happy customers. ;)

Its not just insurance..its citizens. The mentality today is that if you get hurt or are inconvenienced in any way someone ELSE must be responsible and PAY.
IMHO, waivers should be ironclad. You sign that you accept full responsibility, its YOURS 100%. But society doesnt think this way....and neither do courts, lawyers, and citizens.

In STL we have a long stretch of industrial road called Hall Street that used to be where all the hot rods would run. People gather every Sunday and line up side by side and gun it for a quarter mile or so. Cops make their rounds at 11 and scatter everyone.
The best part is that I've been maybe 4-5 times, and everytime I go there - a spankin fresh yellow Corvette Z06 comes and gets like one run in before the cops come. The fuzz always comes right after he does.
My guess is - either the cops know the guy or the screamin Z06 wakes the cops up.
