View Full Version : Wistful for a Mustang

I don't know what it is, but every few months or so, I'll get the hankering for that deep rumble, the lumpy idle, the hooligan donuts in parking lots, laughing off Civics and minivans at the stop lights. Then my obsession deepens a bit, and I start researching tubular K-members, lightweight suspension components, rear seat delete, a set of RP-F1s, a lightweight flywheel, a catback exhaust, headers... Then it gets real bad. Full suspension workover, cams, cylinder heads, tuning, stripping weight, and making it look like a V6 instead of a GT. A 99-04 could be cool, but mm, the '05+.... sexy.

Not really since the only mustangs I would ever want to own are the Fox bodies and back. Can't stand the newer mustrangs.

I caught it for a while. I sold my first Miata for a brief stint with a 96 SN-95 mod motor car. I figured working at a shop that specializes in Ford V8s would be a good connection to make it fast on the cheap.
It was great for the first month, and then it completely fell to pieces. Biggest piece of **** I can imagine owning. I traded it for my 97 Ranger (which has been fantastic) and saved up to get another Miata on the side.
Hopefully I won't go astray again.

The new Mustangs are cool, still a bucket of bolts like all mustangs, but the styling is old skool retro cool. I like them. The previous generation you couldnt give me! Honestly the new style is the first Mustang that I would consider owning since the 1970 model.

Don't you think an LS3 powered NA would accomplish the same goals, but perhaps be a bit more fun? :)

It probably would, but it wouldn't look like one. I have a soft spot in my heart for a Bullitt version of the Mustang. Sometimes inefficiency is fun.

I agree. The older body style mustangs are ugly, especially fox bodies.

Then you fail Simon. The fox bodies look naff. What was before the fox body?
I see where you're coming from Kevin, it's not always about being the fastest and the lightest. It's that whole muscle car appeal of a big chunk of metal being able to move fast because of the even bigger chunk of metal under the hood. They also look fairly badass too.

^ Oi! Lay off the Fox! :p There are a lot of Foxes out there that could chew up the fastest Miatas around on a road course.

A nice late body style fox, with the saleen body...mmm. But I will admit one thing. I yet to see one in any other color then black that looks good.

Jack do you like Mustang SVO's?

We're not saying their slow, they are just redneck looking. If I were to even consider a mustang, it'd have to be an 04-05 SVT Cobra. A kid (I say kid as he was very immature) I graduated H.S. with had two '04 SVT Cobras that were pretty damn quick. He drove a competition orange one to school everyday and had a Mystichrome that was rarely driven (~1k miles on the odometer) that laid 560ishwhp.

Yea they do have the mild Redneck issue but I am from New York and didn't have the whole redneck issue as much.
BTW that is an intercooler in the grill there,... from the post by the guy I never figured out if it was turbo or super but either, I bet it hauls some:butt:

Just googled them, they look like Sierra Cosworth impersonators somewhat:

What's the deal with them?

I just checked out the SVO on wiki, didn't see an obvious British connection.

The Fox Mustangs can be made to go fast for sure.
Theyre just cheap, clunky cars with horrible styling IMHO. Being a fan of the German V6 engine early Capris I considered a 5.0 Capri when they came out...but changed my mind quickly after I drove a new one. Back in the day a friend bought a brand new 5.0 GT Mustang and I thought it was quite hilarious how creaky and rattly that POS was before the window sticker had even been peeled off.

Yea your are kind correct it is still a Ford
IMO the only way to really build an Ford is to tear it all the way down and replace/reinstall the parts cause for some reason when they road off the factory they did a ****ty job. Kinda like the supra and the 7m-gte headgasket mistake :lol::facepalm:

Yes its not fun for your wallet to have a car that damn near everything on it can be replaced with an aftermarket part. the potential with a mustang, a fox body in particular, is what attracts me to them.
i had a friend with this problem, finally cracked and went out and got a 01 GT i believe, loved the car for about a month. then he fell out of love for it, started to throw parts at it and that kept it going for a few more months etc etc
long story short, hes got a s2000 now

I really need the disposable income of the average AIG executive, so I can play around with everything. I'd really like an '05+ Mustang to fool around with, but on the other hand I could appreciate the S2000 for its high-revving nature. But that big fat chest-shaking ground-pounding rumble..... ooh baby.
