It's not his car, it's a member on CR.net.

Correct and it happens to be one of the most annoying members on Cr, atleast IMO. I am kinda happy he had that problem...

Does that make me a bad person:lol::lol:

I'm not on CR enough to notice anyone annoying. I mainly browse the For Sale section and that's it.

I get bored so I look just cause I like to see what different things people are doing. I will admit 90% of this stuff on there is junk but sometime I find a car that is nice or a mod or two someone did to their car I like.

There are a few nice cars I really like and then there are those that I think would be better off in a scrap yard somewhere.

Anyways, before we get too off-topic....does anyone know how this happens? I'm too lazy to read the thread.

All I got out of reading the post was:

-Guy bought a used motor some time ago
-Installed said motor AS-IS
-Car won't crank
-Spent months trying to get it to run
-Finally cracked open the Valve Cover
-was messing with the timing belt, and noticed the rear of the Cam didn't more
-removed Cam cover to see a clean break right under Cam cover.

So in the end... guy bought the new motor with the broken cam

As on a similar note... someone else spoke on the site about how they broke there Cam also... So there may be 3 cases of broken Cams not 2 :jawdrop:
Edit:: It was Jarred, PO of Eric's car who claims to have seen that once on a car that was parted out in FL.
Ive seen that only one other time on a miata down here that was parted out. I would have never guessed that was the problem. Im glad you figured it out finally......lots of wasted money and time later lol

reading that guy's story shows thaht the motor was running and the car drove fine until it made a metallic crunch sound and quit. he had no spark and no rpm reading in megasquirt. first place i'd have looked was CAS and if the exh cam was spinning or not. but dude gets a coil pack and a wiring harness? after hearing a metallic crunch??

Uhh yeah. This looks possibly to be a classic reason why you sell things 'as is'.
Anyone dumb enough to throw wiring and ignition parts at their car after something snaps is probably dumb enough to screw something up and possibly cause an issue to begin with.

Mine snapped when I was running about 6500 rpm in 5th gear on 316... and I drove the car for 3 weeks with the broken camshaft :D It broke the rear half of the intake cam, the cause was one of the bolts that hold one of the cam caps sheered off and allowed it to flex...well, iron doesn't flex very well. I can't see the CR post, but i'll check it when I get home. IIRC, I broke mine sometime late fall of 2004.

From the photos, it looks that the CR motor may have broke for the same reason at is snapped right under the cam cap/cover.
