ok so I guess I will finally get around to start this. Been storing parts for about a year now...

So the little 1.6 in my car is finally starting to die so I am swaping to a 1.8.

Block:

99-00 short block (Thanks to Ben for hooking me up back when he was at MazMart

a box of parts

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v132/lostDSMsoul/miata/Motor_Build/IMG_0024.jpg

So I still missing a few parts and plan to grab them in the next few weeks. I am planning for a swap either over the weekend of the 31st or 7th.

you know I think I am forgetting something

oh yea.

not 100% sure. I got it from Ben today, it is small. I think it is the size of a 2554 only a journal version. The last person made just short of 200whp on it so it will be a great starting point.

Hmmm... that means you can upgrade the fuel pump and run stock 94-97 injectors for 7-9 psi. :)

yepo yepo. Currently it going in with a FMU and going to run low boost, looking at 5psi to start with but the end goal for this turbo is 12 psi.

correct. The plans are to get the car fix and then run a kinda panda look, with a green car but have a black hood, truck, top and finish panel.

I am hopping to have the 1.8 90% before I pull the 1.6 as I have a window of oh.. a weekend to do the swap.

Garage is better than out in the wind. I'll bring a couple space heaters.

Hell if I know. I still have a ton of little crap to acquire before I really get started. Oh yeah, and an intercooler setup, that's the last big part.

update:

So i went to the pull a part today and grabed a valve cover off a ford and the little oil filter bolt, since my block didnt' have one.

here is the valve cover all dirty.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v132/lostDSMsoul/miata/Motor_Build/IMG_0029.jpg

I have already cleaned, and started to prep it for the car. It is sitting in the garage right now with the second coat of paint. I also got the intake manifold all painted also.

As for the turbo. While working on it, I figured I would get the specs. So with some quick goggling and some help from Braineak. Got to love how MT.net comes up in goggle search.

The turbo is originally for a Pontiac Sunbird
55 tirm,
30 lb/min
specs out for a 250-270 turbo but some quick reading show that the exhaust housing is the weak point and I should be able to max out at 200-220 on this turbo. Not back for a small turbo that will spool by just looking at it. :D

Still have a list of little parts to find, but I got 99% if the big parts. Oh the gasket kit is ordered and on it way. Should be here by the end of new week or start of next week.

As of right now, I am going to leave it.

looking to to do something close to this, only with the Ford and in black:

Mostly just to mess with some stupid people. As I got my mother cause she walked out when I was sanding it and as like WTF... why the ford valve cover for your Mazda  Yes my mother knew what a valve cover was also

so I have some photos of the valve cover at 80% done

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v132/lostDSMsoul/miata/Motor_Build/valve_cover.jpg

I still need to clean up the silver areas better. With the chrome VC bolts it should be just enough bling for my taste.

Thanks. Now I need to go find some abandoned road sign on some dirty road to make a heat shield.

wildfire0310
01-20-2009, 03:02 PM
ah two steps forward and well two steps backwards.

I got the FM adapter mounted up today. That took a few quick trips to my favorite auto parts store..Home Depot :lol:

Did a quick mock up of what I have here:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v132/lostDSMsoul/miata/Motor_Build/IMG_0030.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v132/lostDSMsoul/miata/Motor_Build/IMG_0031.jpg

Starting to look sexy:D I also picked up a piece of 26ga metal to make some kinda heat shield.

Then noticed a nice little issue

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v132/lostDSMsoul/miata/Motor_Build/IMG_0032.jpg

The only good new is that I was already planing on picking up a small box of nuts and washer to use for bolting the Intake and exhaust manifold already, so now I just need to either find 4 longer studs or just pick up 4 bolts.

Slowly she is coming together,

wildfire0310
01-21-2009, 10:19 PM
So the gasket kit come in today. Which was the biggest thing holding me back. Now I can start to really build the motor and find all the last little things.

BTW so far the kit seem to all great. I will try and get photos. I already lined up the intake, exhaust gauges along with VC. So far they each line up and seem to be nice. The headgasket is the biggest worry of me now.

I'll get some photos up tomorrow

RotorNutFD3S
01-21-2009, 10:23 PM
Ah, so that's what they meant when they said some manifolds were bigger on the ends. Never had seen one before this. Lucky you. lol

I'm sure the gasket kit will be fine.

wildfire0310
01-21-2009, 10:39 PM
Ah, so that's what they meant when they said some manifolds were bigger on the ends. Never had seen one before this. Lucky you. lol

I have never heard of it being an issue and didn't even put two and two to realize a head of time that the bolts wouldn't reach. Either way it will only set me back all of what 4 bucks. No big deal. The wastegate and oil feed line are the bigger issues.

RotorNutFD3S
01-21-2009, 11:00 PM
When I shopped for some aftermarket studs a while back, some sites mentioned that there are some manifolds that would need longer studs on the ends. But I had never seen it on any forum.

The oil feed line you could either make yourself or order from FM or BEGi. They're not too expensive. If you want to go the DIY route, I'm not sure what's the best size to use, but I have 3' of brand new Jeg's -4AN SS braided hose I'll donate to the cause. :)
What's the issue with the wastegate?

Yea the feed line is more of just having to get a T for the feed and pressure sender. I already have the AN fittings for the top. I also need to find a fitting for the drain but that is more of a go to NAPA and after I do a quick search for the thread sizing of the oil drain.

As for the wastegate. I need to find one. The manifold is set up for external gate and I am looking to find some cheap used one and am not having the best luck. So I may have to find an intergate acculturate and block off all the external parts. Nothing super major just stupid small things.

I'll take you up on that offer for the -4 SS line. Send me PM

RotorNutFD3S
01-21-2009, 11:17 PM
Why send a PM? I'll just bring it up on the tech day. :D I even have some brand new Russell fittings from a scrapped dual-feed project from back in my turbo Saturn days. They might be of some assistance to you. I can't use them for anything.

I have:
660420 -4AN to 1/8" Adapter
661710 1/8" Female Pipe Tee
663000 1/8" to 7/32" Tube (I have 2 of these)

Look the part numbers up on Jeg's to see what they look like and if you need them.

Do you know what external gate it's set up for? I know of a TiAL 38mm for sale for pretty cheap, but most EWGs are flanged a little differently.

38mm i believe. IIRC 35/38 mm us the same flange. 44mm is when it switches to the nice 4 bolt square flange.

Well here is what I have right now.

random collection of AN fittings that bolt to the turbo, that ends with a -4AN fitting(the most part of it)

adpater for the original 1.6 oil feed to -4AN (not sure the thread but I am going to find out today if it is the same as the oil pressure sender)

about 16" in -4AN line.

BTW any chance you could mail them, I am still shotting for the weekend of the 31st still. So I would rather have the 1.8 block as close to 100% before the 1.6 motor comes out. The only I want to have to do after the 1/6 is out is switch the parts that are on the 1.6 to the 1.8 and drop the 1.8 in.

There is only two issues with it and why I used kinda. One the brass fittings were in the box.. So I have to go out and replace them and two the old owner couldn't read lol, and its a .7 bar spring not a 7 pound spring.

All in all for the stupid price I got the thing for, i can't complain.

So update on the start of my swap weekend.

Got about 50 percent of the old 1.6 parts on the new motor. Almost set to pull the motor. By the time I get the picker I should be ready to pull the motor.

Ran into my first real problem. I can't get the crankshaft bolt out. Going to rest and start fresh in the morning

RotorNutFD3S
02-07-2009, 01:00 AM
That's where air tools come in real handy. lol

So the new motor and cranking...kinda.

The 1st injector o-ring is shot. So can't really start the car yet. The motor is spining on its on power so that is always a good sign.

Going to have to take tomorrow off from work and fix the injector and then see if the car will cranks.

Ok before anything I have to give a special thanks:

Eric: for all the parts
Kurt: for letting me borrow his engine hoist
Ben: for being the god and figuring out my small little issues and even helping figure out a ghetto, but useable charge piping.

Thanks to a million.

Ok so here are some new photos.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v132/lostDSMsoul/miata/Motor_Build/coil_pack.jpg

Here is still a few issues, like I am running stupid rich now cause my car was running lean so Ben bypassed the stock fuel reg to allow it to run richer out of boost, I still need to get a real exhaust, and some better turbo pipping. All things that will come, but right now the car is drivable and holds 5psi all the way to redline with no real issues. Everything now is just to allow the car to run smoother.

Air filters are for pussies!
Seriously the intake & all the charge tube plumbing pipes were "stuff laying around". Brian and I had a small collection of spare tubes and clamps. We started just laying them out in an order that looked like would work, and it just came together. He's planning on picking up an intercooler setup next week, so we just did what we could to actually make the car drive. Considering the $0 investment, I think it turned out well.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r156/FooSchnickens/dyno%20day/_DSC0291.jpg

Yes I am reaching into a hot engine bay to feel for the oil leak.

I got fixed the whole oil leak and the JB weld seems to be holding fine. The only little oil leak that i still have is coming from the turbo drain which I need to tefon the treads. The main reason I haven't is the bottom turbo-manifold nut felt cross thread and I believe i am going to have to pull the whole manifold off to get that one nut off. Joy.

I just hate the hardware on the Miata. The eclipse was great. The bolts feed though the manifold and threaded into the turbo. I never had a problem with the hardware stripping or anything.

Taking the manifold off is going to be a PITA cause of the EWG. I am so not looking forward to fixing that leak.

I bet not. When you planning on getting it done?

One of these weekends. I am putting it off as it nothing more then a little annoying leak. It will take more work just to get the turbo off the car then it will be to fix the leak. I hate jobs like that. 2 hours to get the part off the car, and then 5 mins to fix the part and then 2 hours to reinstall it.

I plan to redo my exhaust anyway. I have a 3" exhaust from my old DSM that I plan to hack up some and use on the Miata. Then sell the Bosal exhaust that I have.

I wonder if a 3" catback with a muffler will help or hurt my spool vs the 2.25(I think) without a muffler. To be honest I am not sure if my spool could be any faster, unless I started building boost at idle:lol:

Yea the car is running again and I am back in Holcomb bridge.

I love the strange looks I gotten the last two days, since i been to lazy to put the passager seat in. So the motor is reving at everyone, top is down and all you see is the race seat. I was followed for a good few mins by a cop this morning.

18.3-22.1 Afr while at idle(my idles is bouncing between 800-1500 rpms) Time to start figuring out what is wrong with my fuel, or lack there of. Ben mention something and I am going to try and replace my fuel fitter since I don't think it has ever been replace and see if maybe that is why my car is running so lean now.

I got everything from DIYautotune and I recommend them anyday. Everything was packaged nicely and easy to find ever little piece and where it went.

The unassembled MS-1 v3(which is the most supported on Mt.net) is $187 with a silver case, black case is 193. That doesn't include the wiring harness or mod kit. The mod kit was like a dollar I believe.

The assembled(non-pnp) is $329, I am not sure if one could request to have the mods already setup or what not.

The assembly so far hasn't been that bad. There were a few that were just a PITA cause the holes were really really close to each other. I will give you my final opinion once I have it running and I know I didn't f**k something up :D.

I have to do the few mods left for the tach and few others(not 100% what each do, just kinda follow Scotts directions on MT ). I still have to make the wiring harness coming off the DP39(or whatever connector is on the MS). Since I plan to run in parallel at first(I plan to run full standalone in the end but one step at a time), I need to make my boomslang and wiring in the MS to it.

I am about to start looking to see if I can find a local place that carries what is needed for the boomslang or I am going to have to order it off line and that going to hold up my build.:(

meh.. not that much. I lucked out as some minor BS has happened lately that causing my sleeping disorder to go haywire. So I have just taken advantage of all the extra free time.

So far the build hasn't been that bad.

All in all, including smoke breaks. The main board took me about 4.5 hours, give or take. About 3 movies. I figured I have about 1.5 - 2 hours worth of hardware work left.

I also have really enjoy building this. Something nice about watching it form in front of me. Now just hope it all works.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v132/lostDSMsoul/mega2.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v132/lostDSMsoul/mega1.jpg

I still need to get a few more parts from DIYautotune before the board is complete. Then still need to build the harness but that should be a cake walk after all this

Just waiting on money and time to head back up to the shop to get the last parts. I plan to try and get my hands on a serial to usb converter and get megatune on my desktop at least to test the board so far. I need to start looking at the small computer shops around here(there a plenty, to see if any have an outdated laptops I can pick up cheap to use for tuning. That may end up becoming the biggest set back :(

Either way project is slowly moving along.

oh yea I finally got around to replacing my fuel filter today since I am not sure when/if it has ever been replace and changed out my plugs since i know they were going bad after all the super rich and super lean days. Hopefully that random misfiring feeling I get sometime will go away. I say misfiring feeling cause nothing showed on the LC1 but not sure if it is fast enough to catch a single misfire.

**** I don't that much either.. just kinda fake it lol.

LC-1 is the model of a type of Wideband O2.

So far the MS has set me back 505.20 with the wideband not counting tools. I have about 40-60 left.

Not counting the wideband, $270. granted the wideband is really need for tuning my car once the MS goes in so, I just count that with cost. Even if I went with the PNP verison I would still need to get the WB.

So after checking a few things today and reading some more I think I realize part of my issue with my car.

A) my car is running lean, which is causing the turbo to spool faster then normal
B) the added boosted from the turbo spooling so damn eariler is causing me to have the 02 tip in issue.

for anyone that doesn't know what I am talking about
Your ECU will always try to keep your Air/Fuel ratio at 14.7 when in a closed loop. Typically anytime below 3.5-4k or when traveling up steep inclines the ECU will be in a closed loop. This causes a hesitation or stumble when travel back and forth between vacuum and boost. The reason being the ECU wants to see 14.7 while your APFR is dumping in excess fuel at the same time. An easy (a few wires) and safe (no lean tip-in when entering boost) solution is an o2 clamp. Typically they use a pressure switch that is connected into a vacuum line. When the switch sees a certain amount of boost (usually .5psi), they trigger the o2 clamp to trick the ECU into thinking that no extra fuel is being added. This will ensure that all your added fuel will be there when demanded upon and you will get rid of the stumble.

So the added air at my lower rpm is ******* with the car and causing it to stumble and just have no power at all. I realized the other day that if I can drag out my gears out and can get the motor to start to from some real vacuum that car will have some pick up.

Dude, I really think you should also try recircing your BOV. Please humor me on this.

currently my bov is sealed.. aka no vacuum to it so it is like it isn't even there. What I need/want to do is I have a greddy RS that I am borrowing from Mick I am going to see if that works better since I can kinda control how much air it leaks.

either way I just need to finish the damn MS and I be able to control my damn fuel and won't have to deal with the 02 anymore either.. win win

nothing.. running low boost so i can get away without the BOV just don't really like it. that and I am trying to stay out of boost most of the time anyway. Tomorrow or tuesday I am going to go get the larger hose i need to try the greddy

So did some work on the car over the weekend. I trying to track down why I am starting to get some cooling issues now that it is becoming summer.

unfortunately the old strips rx7 intercooler is making it hard to really box in my front bumper so I just run some aluminum under the bumper to help direct air flow.

I also did the love DIY/budget way and cut a nice hole in my bumper. I cut a really rough hole. After Ben saw the bumper, he cleaned up the hole as I did some small other things.

Still had some heating issues but they are better. I did find a small leak at my heater cooler that seems to only start leaking once the temps heat up. I wasn't able to test if I fixed that problem yet as it was cool enough today.

Picked up a broken R-lip from Ben(over the weekend) also and installed that today.

Also over the weekend I helped Ben tune his car, which more or less just ment I got to beat on his car :D. Either way I learned how crappy the Xede system is.

I'll have some photos of the hole and the new R-lip in the next day or two. Work starting to get busy and with harder work, which is great cause that means more hours and more money, but less time to work on the car.

So I finally got to drive the car with the 99 injectors and the 255. Finally the car is running rich across most of the board.

I still have some weird issues with the idle but I can't tell if it is super lean or if the bouncing idle is causing the weird reading. It is bouncing from 18ish to 22.1. I still need to really play with it and try connecting the narrowband back up. But finally one set closers.

Thanks again to Eric for bring up the 1.8 water neck up to me. What is weird is that played with the little sensor for the fan after you and Mike left and it flipped on. So my fan sensor seems to be working again, just zipped tied over by the headlight.

Its alive finally.

I finally got to drive my car around the block. Still have a few small issues and one mild issue which I believe I figured out the fix for already just need to get the parts.

I have lean issues again but when the starting problem happened I rehooked up all the o2 so I believe just unhooking the 02 again. My exhaust now vibrates from all hell, but I am hoping i can just get some extra flanges and use them as spacers so I can run the exhaust normally.

The last is I am having brake issues it feels like air in my brakes and I am guess it coming from the ABS like Stealth for warned me about. So now I need to hunt down the thread pitch for the brake lines and find one tee for the front and one female to female connector for the rear. Then I could just remove the ABS block from the engine bay and it should get rid of the soft crappy brakes.

Either way, i got to drive me car today. One step closer.

Walking/bus mostly, but I have had the bike all weekend so I tried to get as much done on the car in between social events. Unfortunately I don't really trust the brakes right now to drive on the street and the exhaust is super annoying so the car is staying off the road for just a bit longer.

Yep, Jason did a great job fixing it up! However for some reason the downpipe still came back down into the subframe after about 150 miles. So I'm going to put one of those yellow poly bushings on the midpipe and see if that helps. If not, I'm going to notch the lip on the subframe until the downpipe doesn't hit it anymore. lol

Well I guess I should finally update this project thread.

First I want to say thanks to a few people:

Eric and Sean for coming up from Newnan back to back to help on the car, and Eric was even hung over the second day.
Kurt for helping with all the issues for the abs swap and for giving me some deals
Ben for loaning me a few parts(i still have them for you BTW) to test fit parts.

So I guess I should give the update for anyone that did catch all the random talk in the random thread.

So about a month and a half ago, I took my car into a storage unit to finally to do some major over haul.

I picked up a reroute spacer from Rev G and was really happy with it. It had one little issue but easily to get around.(don't have any photos of it non-installed.

I also swapped the whole car from an abs car to a non-abs car. It was a decent amount of work, but easier I figured then going non-abs to abs. Thanks again to Kurt for letting me rip apart one of his as a donor car.

I also upgraded a few parts, thanks to Eric and Kurt.
I picked up SS brake lines, PWR rad, 3" exhaust, turbo blanket etc.

Well now onto the photos.

Parts:

my SS lines from Kurt(4th line was already on the car at the time of the photo)

Looks good dude!

The dryer can is on the passenger side as well, except smaller than those on the NA. IIRC, because the FM intercooler I got was the same way, you're supposed to offset the intercooler toward the driver's side to allow clearance for the can. But looks like you got it to work as-is.

Unfortunately I must have damaged my o-ring cause after a quick test of the car. I made some changed to the AFM. While doing some testing for that, one of the o-rings for the injector broke, and started dumping fuel.

So $2-4 dollars is keeping my car from running, but by the time I got to work on the car, the auto parts stores were closed.

Hopefully tomorrow I can get that fixed and finish hunting down some air leaks.

Congrats, its all tuning now from here.

Yea basically. I have three isses and I think two maybe connected.

My 02 on TS was at a flat 14.7 and still NB. So I need setup a way to run my wideband into my MS harness, yet still be removeable if need be. Simple but just haven't done it yet.

second, even with my TPS unhook my tps guage on TS kept slowly climbing by 1 unit of measurement. Just sems funky.

Last it seems there maybe a small power drain. I haven't retested but two weeks ago when testing the unit orignial I left the MS in my car over night and the battery was half dead. I kinda wonder if the tps and this drain could go hand in hand or something.

Plenty of little bugs to fix, but I made a huge step forward in just have the car run off this Ms.

also thanks again, this laptop rocks. Granted I killed my little dc/ac inverter, but meh lol.

How'd you manage to fry that? but yeah, does sound like you have some wiring issues still going on.

The inverter was great. I just plug it inthe car and then hooked up the laptop. Next thing I knew it started smoking and I throw out of car fearing a big old fire. That be my luck lol. Either way no biggy the inverter was old and cheap.

Yea some more crap to look into but one small step at a time. I am not spending much money on the whole MS so guess that means a crap load of time instead.

Hey Drew.. this is for you

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v132/lostDSMsoul/miata/Apirl%20pull/IMG_5800.jpg

So friday night, pulled the car in at 8:30, and by 10:30 had the motor free, with the help of my girlfriend.

This morning, took me all of 45 mins(due to the exhaust having to be pulled) to get my transmission free :p.

Unfortunately I couldn't find a place to machine the flywheel on a Saturday. WTF.. so that is on hold.

Here is how the motor is sitting right now. Ran into a issues they changed the style on the water pump, and the new style is hitting my alternator bracket. So I am planning to meet up with Kurt tomorrow and see if has a newer bracket.

Got the new race clutch line on the transmission and already loving the lack of the damn hardline.

Will upload and update more later.

How'd the hoist work out? I've not used it before.
Also, you can pick up my engine stand if you want, if you think it will make your job easier.

The hoist worked perfectly. Scared me for sec cause I couldn't get pressure in the jack but just ****ed with it and bam. The leveler made the job so easy thanks a bunch.

Are You going to stay with the flex Hose on the reroute?Ive been working up my contacts at work....Im going to order three upper rad Hoses for a an Escalade/Yukon/Tahoe.It is a easy trim job to make it do the whole upper rad path. You would have to find a another retun spot for the heater but....Just a thought.

Come pull mine out next! My oil pan has been leaking since 2007 and I've been to lazy to fix it.
