Popular amongst people here? Has everyone had the chatter that Tommy's (Roadster) did? I'm quite interested in the flyin miata flywheel, seems a good price.

They are known for 'extra noise'...some more then others.

Yeah, they make the clatter pretty damn loud. I'm still going to get another one though. :)

I just got one from Flyin Miata. They sell two models, I got the 13 pound one since they warn you about the noise of the 10 pound one. I have no noise at all, unfortunately its been a year since I drove it before putting the flywheel in with a new motor so I cannot give any info on performance improvement.

Mine was a Fidanza 8 lb.-er and it sounded like a cat gargling razor blades. But it revved like a street bike.

See, that's what gets me. I had a lightweight flywheel in my Ion (went from a 21 pound flywheel to a 7 pound wheel, hoo boy) and I got tired of the flywheel chattering on decel. I liked the revving though. I'm just hooked on having a silent car.

I've had multiple lightweight flywheels. My only complaint was the incompatibility of the Fidanza with Exedy clutches. I never noticed excessive noise...but then again, i might not have hears it over the other lovely noises coming from the car :)

Oh, another thing that has not been brought up in here is the inherant nature of lightweight flywheels to cause idle droop. But once you get used to it, you don't even notice it.

If we're talking about effects of flywheels, the car will slow down a hell of a lot faster in gear than before. And when you turn the key to shut it off, the engine STOPS. No half-hearted spin, just dead stop. It's cool.

FOUR POUNDS? Nice. That's not for the triple clutch unit, is it?

my STOCK flywheel chatters like a ***** when decelerating, and even a little @ idle with the clutch engaged. i HATE it. haha

so many ups and downs to everything you do to a car. I say if it drives great who gives a **** about noise. Your going for performance not grace.

Yup, and I think Tommy will certainly agree.

My Fidanza 8lb. in my previous Miata was pretty tremendously loud. I'm still going to get another one. There were no drivability problems at all. I'd really like to find something a bit lighter this time around.

Agreed. Spoken like a driver not a cruiser

I have the ACT streetlite. My motor revs like no tomorrow, but I put it in the same time as my built engine so I dont really know how it contributed. it makes absolutely no noise.

If you get one do not go with aluminum, for a couple reasons.... one I have seen them oval out the pilot bearing hole and start to make noise, two, they are two pieces, the friction surface is bolted to the aluminum flywheel... never heard of one coming off or coming apart, but with a two piece flywheel that risk is there. I have also heard of problems with the ring gear on the aluminum ones, but exactly what I cannot recall.

so if you want one go for it. forget aluminum and stick with steel, that means use a ACT or FM flywheel, and I think all the JDM ones are steel.

JDM is chromoly, yo, which causes starter gear issues (so I've heard). Act Streetlite? Where'd you get it from and how much does it weigh?

Miataroadster.com. I believe it is 12 lbs. Its a good comprimise of the heavy OEM and the ultralights... I got it because my clutch would be abused and I wanted some mass to dissipate the heat, and wanted some inertia for drag launches, but still wanted to rev quicker. Lack of noise was a side benefit.
