man we're still trying to figure this wet floor board **** out
wet floorboards? - MX-5 Miata Forum

i highly doubt i could get 2 inches of rain water from this little hole he speaks of

i have to figure this **** out, cause it's getting old constantly removing my seats and **** after every rain. i even sat in the car for about 20 minutes the other night when it poured and still couldn't find it

I think I know what they're talking about... You know how there's a black strip that separates the side window from the triangle shaped sail window? Well there's a big rubber bulge at the top of that strip that has a tiny hole in it for water to drain through.

I don't think that's what's causing your leak though.

What he's talking about is at the top corner on each side of the windshield frame, behind the area circled in my attached picture. That catches drops of water when it rains and it flows down inside of the seal. You will see this if it's leaking though, rain drops down right past it.

But someone else in that thread made a good point, I think you started having water issues after the new top went in, so perhaps it needs to be readjusted.

I was having a similar issue in the red car right before I parted it (Drew should remember meeting me for the first time at QT, lol), passenger floor was soaked up front only after it rained and nothing I could find was leaking into the car, including the pesky a/c drain. Replaced all of the seals I could get my hands on. After that, decided it must be the windshield seal, but never changed it since that requires the windshield to come out, so I don't know for sure. Won't know unless Sean puts a new windshield on it.

yeah mines good there.
i think the only good way is for me to take my seats out and the carpet (what lil bit i have left) and sit inside the car while someone douses it with the water hose. i think that will be the best solution

^Yup. If you want help, we can do this on Sunday. Britt has to work. I may go freeze my arse off in the morning at C&O, but I don't know yet.

I had this problem back in the 93, water was pooling in the rocker panels and soaking the floor but nothing else.

If you look under the side of the car there is a lip (assuming NB's are like NA's) and there are ~1/2" slits in that lip where the water drains. Take a screw driver and make em bigger. There's a writeup somewhere in the m.net garage section that has pictures.

Since this started after a top install...
Are you sure some dork didnt put your window seals on backwards?
I have seen that a few times.

My bad Kurt, end of the semester so the old brain is pretty fried.

Kurt, to quote both your posts-
Dempsey and his dad did the top install, and the seams are on correctly, however the 3 metal retainer pieces they mount to on each side are *** backwards according to Stacey at Sport. I'm getting a tan vinyl top, and letting him install it next time as his top installs are great. (yes 3 tops in 2 years )

and i couldn't get in the slots that well, i'm going to have to jack it up probably, all the years of the PO jacking the car up has crimped the piss out of my pinch weld, but all of your advice was taken and thanks

Here's holes Kurt mentioned on an NA. I would think NB's are pretty similar. I used a box cutter to clear them out then a flat head to let em breath.

im not gonna put the blame on Dempsey in anyway at ALL. his top installs are top notch, not to mention there is no water residue or evidence showing that it came from above on the windows or panels. it's something in the bottom the 5-6 inches that stick up from the rocker panel, on the interior under the kickplates are dry as well. this is only going on in the flat part.

Just out of curiosity. When you're driving after a heavy rain can you hear water sloshing around anywhere?

scandmx5
12-03-2010, 03:18 PM
no, i just smell it first, then can splash my hand under the seat. now that the fine mazda carpet is gone , i can probably get a better understanding of where its coming from. i also took my side skirts off and poured some water in the door jam holes and it came out just fine. this only occurs when we have a heavy downpour like the past 2 months where it rains for 2 days. the car is parked level too FWIW

Does the water seem to accumulate more under the seat or up front where your feet would be (I know you said you said splash your hand under the seat)? Those two locations are separated by the forward seat mount bar pretty well, so usually it will be more in one place or the other.

scandmx5

under the seat is where the majority is, some under the seat bar and a lil up front.

I wonder if the top drain is damaged, as that is possible and I think that can leak into the car too. But if the NBs have those lower drains that need to be enlarged like on the NAs, there could be an issue with one of your rear ones as your pinch welds are in rough shape. You should come by on Sunday, we can jack it up and figure it out.

yeah, it looks to me like it comes from below the roll bar mounts behind the seat, i'm guessing where the drains start to empty out. its a PITA but ill try to make it, may be hung over Sunday, Olivier is having a throwdown Saturday night

that leads me to the rain rail top drains.

Was the rain rail replaced with the top?

The rain rail drains are pretty much just plastic funnels with a tube going out the bottom of your car.
If the 'funnel' part of it is cracked it should be easy to have a quick look and determine that.

how is PBR hipster?

I know it might sound weird, but PBR is the new "slummin', ghetto fabulous, hipster" beer. I know several people who drink it now, and turned their nose up at only 1 or 2 years ago. It's weird.
